Debating urban economies: the case of Pompeii
While there are few cities in the Roman world about which we know more, Pompeii has so far played only a very limited role in debates about the nature and performance of Roman Urban Economies. In this talk I will discuss some possible ways to use the material remains of Pompeii to further debates on the economic history of urban communities in the Roman world. Particularly, I will focus on two issues. First, I will discuss the size of the population and the issue of economic inequality, and the degree to which this can be explained from the natural economic hinterland of Pompeii; second, I will discuss the issue of who owned the Pompeian economy.
